We're entering Game Awards season as it has just been announced that the nominees are going to be revealed on November 18th (Monday) at 9am pacific/midday eastern/5pm UK time.

The event itself takes place on December 12th.

EDIT: Added the video for the nominees announcement.

Paper Mario TTYD GOTY?

Personally not expecting that great of announcements; usually, it’s mainly a bunch of F2P shooter game ads so I probably won’t watch most of it.

Hoping NintendoLife does one of those live stream things here, that’d probably be the best way to watch.

My personal game of the year is Visions of Mana, but I highly doubt that will get nominated. 🥲
It's probably going to be a race between Astro Bot and Black Myth: Wukong, with Metaphor: ReFantazio being a possible dark horse.

I don't have strong feelings about this as I rarely play games the year they release anymore (so far I'm only at Splatoon 3's DLC and World of Goo 2), but I hope the show is at least not a slog to get through. I know they're gonna let the winners talk for more than 5 seconds and the dumbest people in gaming will applaud that as if that isn't the absolute bare minimum for an award show, while the game is still half advertisements for games that a lot of which either don't need it or will interest literally no one who watches it, while 90% of the awards are given out in 20 seconds each.

I have no confidence will hit any standards of credibility for an awards show but I hope its at least a fun show of trailers.

Doubt there will be a Nintendo GOTY nomination this year but I would be very happy to see Astro Bot on the line-up!

Soooo... Astro Bot for GOTY, Nintendo probably gets nothing.... Why do I care lol? (Not being rude to ppl who do, just I find every year I enjoy this less and less... Man I sound like AntiMatter.)

Everything that has ever happened, there was once a time where it hadn't happened yet. And at that time, people might have been, like, "Yeah, but that's never happened." And then it happened. And once it's happened, you're, like, "Well, now it's happened."

GOTY is an interesting one this year, I expect (and also kind of hope...) that AstroBot will swing it.

AB winning sends a nice message to the industry in that there is still very much an appetite and a 'space' for single player games, alongside hopefully pushing a renaissance for the genre of 3d platforming.

For me personally, I'd like to see Prince of Persia and Tekken 8 be part of the conversation... but could be unlikely. FF Rebirth could swing it I suppose? Metaphor is perhaps just slightly too niche to win.

The indie arena will be fun though, with Baltro / Animal Well. IMO - Balatro deserves to scoop a few!

Sony's issues aside, they did a great job with hosting quality software on their platform this year. Every major GOTY contender will likely be on PS5, with a couple of them (Astro Bot and FF7 Rebirth) being exclusive.

Currently Playing: Fields of Mistria (PC); Cookie Clicker (PC); Metaphor: ReFantazio (PC); Overboard! (PC)

I am expecting a lot of non-Nintendo games to get GOTY nominations, mostly Sony’s games. Echoes of Wisdom mightttt have a chance to get GOTY nomination, but I have a feeling the award show will keep Nintendo games reserved for that “best family game” award category.

Honestly, compared to previous years, I actually don’t think I’ll be watching this and only keeping up with articles on NL and its sister sites. I’ve found the award shows to get kind of lackluster in recent years, plus with how badly they managed speeches last year with Aonuma during his Zelda speech and tried to get him off the stage just for spending a bit longer speaking, I don’t know, I feel like the show favors ads and commercialism over actual achievements in gaming and honoring the hard work the nominees put into their games.

I don’t think there will really be any gaming announcements that will interest me (besides the Smash Bros. reveals in the past) but I do hope that others that like The Game Awards enjoy watching the livestream. I’ll maybe consider watching it if NL has a livestream of the event on here site where you chat with other users, I found those types of livestreams are so fun with the socialization.

Seems a new rule is in place:

Question: Are DLCs, expansion packs and remakes/ remasters eligible?
Answer: The Game Awards aims to recognize the best creative and technical work each year, irrespective of the format of that content’s release. Expansion packs, new game seasons, DLCs, remakes and remasters are eligible in all categories, if the jury deems the new creative and technical work to be worthy of a nomination. Factors such as the newness of the content and its price/value should be taken into consideration.

https://thegameawards.com/faq

Remakes have been nominated for GotY before (FF and RE) but not remasters and DLC. So the winner may end up being something like Elden Ring (got DLC this year) or TLoU 2 (got a remaster this year).

@Grumblevolcano They 100% did that so Elden Ring could get nominated/win GOTY.

If big enough DLC is fair game for it's own nomination then I am salty AF, considering Xenoblade Chronicles has been king of standalone DLC before this was put into effect. (Mind you, I also haven't played Elden Ring yet.)
At the end of the day, I don't really have any excitement for TGA's as a whole, they just consistently feel so...bleh. They're the "I expected nothing, and I'm still let down" kind of event for me. If NintendoLife hosts a watchalong on here, then I'll prob just chill here with the forum peeps. I've been here less than a year, and chatting with the folks on NL has been more fun than all of TGA events combined.

DLC winning "Game of the Year"?

That's like "Oppenheimer" winning "Best Picture" at the 2024 Oscars.
And then "Oppenheimer" winning "Best Picture" at the 2025 Oscars, for some kick-ass Blu-Ray extras.

A remaster winning "Game of the Year"?

That's like "Titanic" winning "Best Picture" at the 1998 Oscars.
And then "Titanic" winning "Best Picture" at the 2013 Oscars for its new 3D version.

The DLC thing isn’t entirely unprecedented - Cyberpunk’s Phantom Liberty was nominated in multiple categories, including best narrative. Though it won in best ongoing game or something.

I look forward to seeing which games I may play in 2-3 years picks up prizes. Like others in the thread, I also rarely play a game in the year of its release these days. Balatro and Rise of the Golden Idol are my only two in 2024 so far - though I may yet play Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown before Dec 31.

Predictions for GOTY:

  • Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree
  • Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
  • Astro Bot
  • Metaphor ReFantazio
  • Silent Hill 2
  • Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth

Winner: Shadow of the Erdtree.

Also I'm gonna call it and say Nintendo takes home zero awards this year, and only gets nominated in two categories (Best Family, Best Action/Adventure). I think Mario Party does not get nominated for Best Multiplayer.

I'm not sure if I agree that DLCs should count as standalone entrants for all categories, but I certainly think that Shadow of the Erdtree was better than every unique release I've played this year, and better on its own than most AAA games period. Of course, I don't play many new games that don't launch on Nintendo consoles, so I haven't played Astro Bot, but that seems to have a lot of heat as well

kkslider5552000

My biggest problem with the nominations are how obvious it is that the people who choose them don't think very hard about the different aspects of games. Just their favorite games (which often are the most hyped games of the year, conveniently)...also did this thing good, and thus they've automatically decided that every hyped AAA western game had a better soundtrack than Xenoblade 2, somehow. Just endless nominations, because being good enough in a category in a game you love is all you need, apparently.

That might not be as true this year as it feels like there's at least less of an obvious consensus of what GOTY is this year, or even nominations. (unlike the last 2 years where we basically knew the winner going into it) Like do you choose the slightly controversial FFVII remake or a DLC or not quite Persona 6 or acknowledge 3D platformers are better than the things you like? Any of them would be at least a bit surprising to me. That's also why I appreciated the 2021 nominations, I dunno how the seemingly very boring people who nominate these also nominated a 2D Metroid and Psychonauts, but it was cool to see.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Balatro in the GOTY running, just to be hip. But it definitely won’t win. They love a token indie, like Hades and Stray, but rarely give them the big prize. Don’t know what I think should win - maybe FFVII: Rebirth or Astro Bot. But who knows? If Dragon Age Inquisition can win, anyone can!

I'd think that Balatro would be a worthy winner. It's rare enough that a game comes out in February and people are still playing it in large numbers at this stage of the year, let alone when it's an indie game that was probably made for less than what Square Enix spends on office furniture.

That said, I'd think that it'll probably go to one of the big budget AAA games, because it almost always does.

Linking the related GotY thread since people were talking about the game awards there: https://www.nintendolife.com/forums/general_discussion/game_o...

I'll be really curious to see what gets nominated. Nintendo will get nominated for family game but could easily lose it this year. I'm hoping Zelda gets nominated for a category or two even if it doesn't win anything. The indies category will be interesting to watch.

Obviously Astro Bot is being nominated for GotY but I really hope it wins. Having DLC win would feel like a bit of a letdown.
